The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

     The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of Tongren University grew out of the English Class of Mingde Middle School set up in 1920. In 1978锛孴ongren Teachers College was founded, setting up the subject of English and the major of English Education for college students. In 1993, the subject of English was renamed as the Department of English officially. In 2001, the Department of English recruited university students for the first time jointly sponsored by Guizhou Normal University and opened the subject of Japanese. In September of 2001, as the first majors with the authority to enroll university students in Tongren University, the Department of English began to recruit university students all over the country. In 2009, the Department of English was renamed as the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and was granted a charter to confer Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in 2010.
      Currently the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures sets up one major---English, twelve classes with 422 full-time students. There are totally 54 teaching and administrative staff in the Department, including 43 full time teachers, with 4 professor, 14 associate professors, 20 lecturers; with 2 Ph.D, 21 masters and 2 Ph.D. students.
      The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is broadening its connections and academic exchanges with sister universities at home and abroad to push its research to a forward position in the world, often inviting famous scholars to give lectures. Every year the department sends some of its teachers abroad for training, lecturing, or attending international conferences. Recently, over ten teachers have studied in famous universities in Britain, America, Australia, Japan and Thailand. With the increasing talent introduction of doctors and masters, the teaching level in the Department has achieved sustained development.
